Orwell by Álvaro Goula & Pablo Figuera

You've heard of sofa-cum-beds. You've heard of recliner sofas too. But have you heard of a sofa-bed-cabin? Bet not!
Designed with the intention of providing a nook to relax, entertain and rest, the Orwell sofa also addresses the need for privacy. You can use it to curl up on after a long day at work, lie down while reading a book on sunny weekends or privately nap in office by unfolding the heavy integrated curtains of your cabin.
This hybrid furnishing is essentially a chaise-lounge sized sofa with high walls on three sides and two roll down curtains. The walls are made of wooden panels, making them sturdy enough to lean on while the heavy quilted curtains insulate against sound.
A great fit in studio homes and small apartments, the Orwell is a multi-function piece that maximizes the living space.  Its design is reminiscent of childhood days when many a times we desired a small tent-like-room for ourselves.
Currently, the Orwell is a prototype piece from Goula Figuera. It is perfect for shared rooms, large families, and could double up as a nap-pod in funky office spaces like those of Google, so we hope it will soon be picked up for manufacturing by a company!
Interestingly, the Orwell is named after George Orwell, author of the novel titled ‘1984.’ Why? Because, in his novel, Orwell refers to the lack of privacy felt by people… even within the walls of their own homes. How sad, but how true! Will the Orwell sofa/bed/cabin provide the cocoon we seek in a world that is our own?
